“Video games are bad for you? That's what they said about rock-n-roll.” - Shigeru Miyamoto

Nintendo just doesn’t get online gaming (yea, still)

This year’s DICE Summit is coming to a close, but not without some stupidity courtesy of Nintendo’s Perrin Kaplan. This wouldn’t be the first time she’s said something stupid on behalf of her employers (she once stated that the Wii would be region free), but it’s still shocking to see someone in this position so out of touch with gaming. Alongside downplaying the recent announcement of Manhunt 2 coming to the Wii, she let out this little gem (you can read the full interview here):

We aren’t giving up on online games at all, and Mario Kart for the Nintendo DS is an excellent example of Nintendo’s online gaming that almost everyone is playing. Now, massively multiplayer online gaming is probably not a direction that Nintendo will be going. I think that’s a niche area that other companies have more expertise in.

Niche? That’s right, niche. She just called the ten million+ people who play World of Warcraft and Guild Wars, among other titles, a niche. You know the real reason why the Wii won’t have any MMORPGs? Because no one wants to input hundreds of idiotic friend codes just to go hang out in an online world or go dungeon crawling with their buddies, and they know it. All this bullshit about protecting gamers from child predators is not only costing them online support from developers, it’s literally eliminating entire genres from appearing on the Wii. POPULAR genres, not NICHE. It’s idiotic to say that you’re not giving up on online games and then calling the biggest movement in gaming today a fucking niche.

Maybe Perrin Kaplan and Jack Tretton should hook up and have stupid children together.
